WORSHIP THE SERVANT KING
August 1, 1999
1 Corinthians 11:20-33

INTRODUCTION:

a. What you say is important because words mean things

b. Think of how our language is used to deceive or confuse us

1. Ever tried to understand an insurance policy or an investment prospectus

2. What about political gobbledygook

a. Revenue enhancement = "tax"

b. Investment in America = "tax"

c. Budget cutback = Will not spend as much more as we wanted

c. Have you heard the term "oxymoron"
1. Things that do not seem to go together but are used together
a. Jumbo Shrimp

b. Military intelligence

c. Servant King

d. Today I want to share the truth of that with you as we share communion

I. JESUS THE SERVANT

a. Jesus met the needs of the people around Him

1. Food and drink

2. Healing of body

3. Comfort of emotions

4. Forgiveness of Sins

b. Jesus was never in a hurry and serving others came first

c. In the upper room He took a towel and washed the disciples' feet

d. Ultimately He died for us

1. The Messiah as a Suffering Servant is a theme of the OT

2. He gave Himself willingly for us

3. Mark 10:45 "Not to be served but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many."


II. JESUS THE KING

a. From the throne of heaven He came and entered our world

1. God became a man
b. People followed Him and called Him "Messiah", "King"

c. Greeted Him as a king on His final entry into Jerusalem

d. Pilate had the title "King of the Jews" written in three languages on a placard above Him

e. After the resurrection He Ascended into heaven and returned to the throne

f. He will come again to rule all creation

III. WE MUST REMEMBER BOTH

a. He is both - Servant King

b. He left us with a meal to help us remember - we call it "Communion"

c. "As often as you do this," He said, "remember Me."

1. How??? as SERVANT KING

2. Remember "Words mean something"

d. Think on what I have shared with you this morning as you prepare
